Call for Poster Designs
Un-convention are calling for poster design submissions for the upcoming music event, ‘Un-convention Factory’ which is taking place on the 8th May 2010 at the Heritage Centre, Macclesfield.
As part of a larger event called Unknown Pleasures, celebrating the life of Ian Curtis on the 30th anniversary of his death, Un-Convention has been commissioned to develop a very special version of the event. Un-Convention have teamed up with the creators of iconic indie-rock footwear, Converse, to search for 300 of the UK’s most promising creative minds.
The event is a truly unique experiment where 8 bands, 60 music industry professionals and 300 participants will record, produce and release an album in a day.
The event is free to attend, although participants must register in advance as numbers are limited, and will include the likes of Reverend Soundsystem, The Whip, I am Kloot, New Education, The Virginmarys, plus more.
The central idea is that we are demystifying the ‘music industry’, by breaking down the processes involved in producing a record, and putting it into a production line. This will all take place in a single day inside a Mill in Macclesfield, which will be transformed into the ‘Un-convention Factory’. The Factory will include a recording studio, graphic design area, a digital space, and an area for debating issues around the production and release of the album.
We are asking for submissions from designers and artists to come up with a design for a poster for the event.
From the submissions a panel from Un-convention will select one, which they believe best represents the ethos of the Factory. This design will be used to screen print 300 posters, one each for the people participating in the event. There will also be a live demonstration of the posters being screen printed at the event itself. The selected design, plus some of the others submitted will also be displayed on the Un-convention website, and as part of an exhibition on the day.
There is no fee or prize as such for the selected design, but this will be a high profile, and prestigious event, and we believe a great platform for designers and artists to showcase their talent. The selected designer will receive two tickets to attend the day, and the evening gig in Macclesfield.
Criteria for designs:
The posters will be screen printed by hand, therefore to be eligible for use, the design must meet the following criteria:
Size: A2 Portrait (420 x 594mm)
Colour: 2 colour. Solid colours only, with no tints or gradients.
Coverage: Due to the limitations of this process, a 60% ink coverage for the design is recommended.
Text / Type: It is recommended that fine / small text is avoided.
Artwork: We will require artwork electronically. Ideally artwork should be supplied in a format that allows layers to be separated (Illustrator or Photoshop are preferable). Also it is worth baring in mind the nature of the screen-printing process means that there could be slight movement in registration.
