Gareth Main – Editor, Bearded Magazine
Gareth founded bi-monthly music magazine Bearded after being disappointed by the lack of quality magazines on the newsstand dedicated to independent music.
Launched in August 2007, Bearded is entirely independent, publishes on 100% recycled material and focuses all its coverage on independent record labels. In July 2008, the magazine launched Beardaid, a unique subscription service which subsidises advertising revenue for independent labels in the magazine. This gives independents the opportunity to advertise in a national publication for a mere fraction of the cost (from £30-£120 rather than £1,000-£7,500).
The idea behind Bearded is to give independent labels the same amount of national coverage as majors, and to facilitate this through comprehensive reviews, features and advertising. Bearded was the first and still only magazine to feature Matt Berry and David Shrigley in a musical context and has long-championed the likes of KateGoes, Paul Hawkins and Jezus Factory records, all of whom are now attracting rapidly increasing amounts of press and radio coverage.
